Management Agenda Wins at AT&T Shareholders Meeting
Excerpt: "In a raucous annual meeting Wednesday that lasted almost three hours, AT&T Corp. management won all the votes, but concerned shareholders and upset employees got their say.... None of the seven shareholder proposals was approved, including one that would have given employees the option to choose the company's old traditional pension plan or a cash balance plan imposed in 1997 that cut many older workers' retirement payments." (Cincinnati Post)

Pressure Rises for Tax Deal
Excerpt: "House and Senate negotiators struggled to complete work on a compromise version of President Bush's tax cut late last night as lawmakers said the prospect of Democratic control of the Senate made it likely that the 11-year, $1.35 trillion package would be the last significant piece of tax legislation this year." (Washington Post)

Negotiators Try to Finish Tax Plan
Excerpt: "Negotiators met late into the night Thursday and said they made some progress, but no final compromise was likely until Friday." (Associated Press, via Excite News)

Older Americans Fare Well, For the Most Part
Excerpt: "By and large, Americans aged 50 and older are in better financial shape than their parents were at the same stage in life. The problem is that the withering of traditional pension plans adds risk to the retirement years, as more people become dependent on their own investments." (The [Philadelphia] Inquirer)

Vanguard to Launch Exchange-Traded Fund
Excerpt: "A version of one of Vanguard Group's most popular stock-index funds will begin trading on the American Stock Exchange on Thursday, the Malvern-based mutual fund group said yesterday.... This is the first time Vanguard is offering its version of an exchange-traded fund, which can be bought and sold at varying prices throughout the trading day. Mutual funds, in contrast, are priced at the end of trading each day." (The [Philadelphia] Inquirer)

Opinion: Simulating the Triple Bottom Line
Excerpt: "Some fallacies do not die easily. In the financial industry, perhaps the most tiresome and troubling fallacy is that social investing yields lower financial returns than conventional investing.... A conference held in New York City this week intends to give institutional investors a firsthand look at how well socially responsible investment products can perform financially." (SocialFunds.com)

Another Question is Answered in the Who's the Employer Q&A Column
In the last question you mention the substantial presence test. Would you explain that in more detail? (BenefitsLink.com)

Another Question is Answered in the Who's the Employer Q&A Column
In a previous question you discussed the employment status of illegal aliens, and you mentioned the potential to exclude nonresident aliens. Would you elaborate? I thought illegal aliens could be excluded under that clause. (BenefitsLink.com)
