Analysis: DOL Seeks Input on Automatic Rollovers, Coming in 2004
Excerpt: "Beginning in 2004, when departing employees leave no instructions for accounts worth $1,000 to $5,000, plan sponsors that want to distribute those accounts will be required to set up individual retirement accounts (IRAs) for the 401(k) amounts. The Department of Labor (DOL) has recently released a request for comments about how such accounts should be structured." (Thompson Publishing Group)

Excerpt: "The conditional approval was needed to obtain the remaining $200 million in interim financing from US Airways' lead investor, Retirement Systems of Alabama, the airline has said in court documents. But to obtain the loan guarantee, US Airways still has to win approval of its reorganization plan from U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Stephen S. Mitchell ... US Airways executives said last month that they would ask the federal bankruptcy court to terminate its pilots' pension plan ..." (Washington Post)

N.C. Treasurer Calls for State Constitutional Amendment to Prevent Use of Pension Funds for Budget

Opinion: Bush Simplification Plan Is Way to Cut Baby Boomers' Pension Rights
Excerpt: "President George W. Bush's budget is a road map for a pension system with stripped-down security for future retirees. The budget would speed the shift of pension responsibility from employers to employees. It sets up the likelihood that fewer small and medium-sized businesses would offer pensions at all." (Newsday)

Mutual Funds: Their 5 Best-Kept Secrets
Excerpt: "When we sent the 25 largest fund families a survey asking about, among other things, proxy-voting policies, portfolio managers' compensation, and conflict-of-interest policies, only five companies--American Century, MFS, Putnam, T. Rowe Price, and Vanguard--provided any information.... What you don't know can hurt you. So here are five things that mutual funds should be telling you to help you make better fund choices." (Consumer Reports)

Excerpt: "A report to be released today casts fresh doubt on the city of San Diego's ability to pay all of its pension and retiree health care obligations-- including about $1.1 billion in future liabilities not listed on official balance sheets-- without new sources of cash." (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
