[Guidance Overview]
Supreme Court Re-affirms Deference to Plan Administrator (PDF) 4 pages. Excerpt: "We would identify three messages for plan sponsors in this decision: First, plan provisions with respect to the calculation of benefits for rehires are ripe litigation targets and should be drafted to clearly avoid the issue in this case, essentially a dispute about what the plan actually said. Second, the current majority on the court clearly favors deference to a plan administrator's interpretation of plan provisions wherever it is not unreasonable."

Michigan Legislature Approves Plan for 30,000 School Employee Retirements
Excerpt: "The bill will boost monthly pension benefits for eligible teachers and other school employees who retire between July 1 and Sept. 1. Under the bill, school employees ages 55 and over with at least 30 years of service can calculate their pension benefits with a multiplier of 1.6% instead of 1.5%. For a teacher with a final average annual salary of $80,000, that would mean an extra $200 a month."

Four Former Continental Pilots Suing Airline, Claiming Being Shortchanged on Retirement Pension Benefits
Excerpt: "In their lawsuit, the pilots claim Continental never informed them about the [pension calculation] change, and they discovered it only after they applied for retirement. Continental 'kept the information secret, giving the disappointing news to pilots individually and only when they retired -- only after it would be too late to affect their performance, their job demands, their retirement planning and their ability to collectively protest,' the lawsuit claims."

That project will reconsider the deferred recognition techniques allowed under U.S. GAAP. Although the FASB appears to be waiting for the outcome of the IASB's project, it has acknowledged that its ultimate goal is convergence with the IASB's standard."
