Back Story:
Tuesday night in Columbia, Mo. I had just finished with the Equine rotation of veterinary school and was going out to celebrate. As we were sitting at the bar, a guy came over and started talking to me. His arrogance offended me, and I told him off. Little did I know, but Matt had been watching me and heard the exchange.
Matt was at McNally's that night as part of the Engineer Celebration: E Week. The entire week had nightly events and culminated on Saturday night with the Engineer Ball. Matt's goal that night was to find a date to the dance. His classmate was the one who originally approached me and was known as an arrogant womanizer. Matt, impressed that I had stood up to him, slipped beside me and started talking. Within a few minutes, he had asked me to the dance and I had accepted.
Engagement:
I had asked off for the weekend of our four year anniversary and as an added bonus we had a doctor training on Monday, so I got an additional day off. We spent the weekend in Kirksville. I asked if on our way through Columbia, we could have late lunch with a friend. Matt said we could have lunch in Columbia, but not late because he had dinner. Matt asked if I wanted to stop by McNally's for some pictures. I wasn't sure they would be open on a Sunday afternoon, but since it was on the way, I said sure.
When we got there, all the lights were on and the sign said "OPEN" so we ran through the rain and went inside. It was completely empty aside from the owner. I made my way to the bar stool where it all began, when I felt Matt take my hand and turn me around and he was on his knee. He tells me that four years ago at this bar he met a wonderful, beautiful, inspiring woman. He told me that the past four years have been an incredible journey and he couldn't imagine continuing the journey with anyone else. He asked me if I would make him the happiest man and marry him. I said yes through my tears and he pulled out a beautiful ring. Next thing I know the bar owner is congratulating us by name-and I realize that he was in on it. He told me that the bar is never open on Sundays, but Matt had arranged all of this for his proposal.
I call my parents and family. I send out mass text messages with pictures of the ring. Matt tells me about meeting my dad to ask for my hand and how he continued my family's tradition and got some of my late grandmother's diamonds to incorporate into the one of a kind ring that he designed. We get home and start getting ready for dinner-another surprise. At 5:30 I find a chauffeured Escalade in the driveway. We are whisked away to Ameristar Casino. We have dinner, and while Matt steps away, the manager comes and tells me that the bill is taken care of. Matt returns and takes me into the casino. Matt strides with purpose to the central bar and asks if I want a drink. He takes my hand, turns me away from the bar and asks me if I recognize anyone there. I see the other people for the first time and realize my entire family, my best friend from kindergarten, both groups of our work friends, and neighbors are all there waiting to surprise me.
Then things start falling in place-My mom faked surprise when I called her. My friends who had sent me back excited text messages (which I had dictated to Matt) already knew. The "random" day off I had the next day was planned between Matt and my boss. I found out that Matt's friends had picked up Matt's truck and brought it to the casino, where we were spending the night. I found out about all the text messages Matt had sent out the previous week to get everyone there and his pleas to keep it off of social media.
I could never say that this was the proposal I had "dreamed" of, because I had no idea it could be anything CLOSE to this thoughtful, personal, romantic, elaborate, and well planned. I never knew that fairy tales were real until that night, four years ago, when the most amazing person walked up to me at McNallys to ask me to the dance.
