Guess What? Exercise Can Prevent Low Back Pain

Back Pain lifting

Acute low back pain (LBP) is a very common condition. 80% of people at some point in their lives will experience acute low back pain. It can hit with you by simply rolling out of bed in the morning, swinging a golf club or reaching over to pick up a child’s toy.

Acute low back pain can lead to time off from work and interfere with our ability to perform daily activities. Fortunately, most episodes of acute LBP are self-limited and improve with time and conservative treatments. However, recurrence is common, with estimates ranging from 24% to 80% in the first year.

There is concrete evidence in the literature demonstrating the benefits of exercise alone or in combination with education for the prevention of acute low back pain. The types of exercises indicated include core strengthening of trunk and abdominal muscles, spinal range of motion exercises and general aerobic conditioning exercise.

The reduction in the recurrence of low back pain in one study was an impressive 25–40%.
