How to Use Safeguard 10% Fenbedazole Suspension Goat Dewormer – Dosage Chart for Worming Dogs & Puppies!

Deworming Multiple Dogs or Litters of Puppies with Safe-guard or Panacur 10% Liquid Dewormer…

Safeguard for Goats – (Fenbendazole) Suspension 10% is great for multiple dog owners and dog breedersas well as pet rescues, and shelters.

As a dog breeder, I personally prefer to use the Safe-Guard suspension fluid(labeled for goats) instead of the granules (labeled for dogs) because it’s just a whole lot easier and more accurateto administer to our puppies. PLUS its more affordable and equally as effective!

The drug Fenbendazole is found in both Safe-GuardÂ® and Panacur CÂ®. The only difference between the two is really just the brand name.

THE INTESTINAL PARASITES THAT SAFE-GUARD TREATS

Safe-guard 10% (fenbendazole) Suspension is labeled for goats & cattle but can be safely used to treat dogs. Safe-guard treats five of the most common intestinal parasites found in a dogs GI tract (*only recommend for some tapeworms)

The 5 Parasites Include:

Hookworms
Roundworms
Whipworms
Giardiasis (Giardia)
Some species of tapeworms, but not tapeworms from fleas

Deworming dogs and puppies with Safe-guard

*Tapeworms:Safe-Guard is effective against several types of tapeworms but is NOT EFFECTIVEagainst Dipylidium Caninum , which is the most commontype of tapeworm. Also called the flea tapeworm , double-pored tapeworm, or cucumber tapeworm.

If you think your dog has tapeworms , it’s recommend to use a different dewormer with praziquantel, or epsiprantel in it. Such as Bayer Tapeworm Dewormer for Dogs on Amazon or Drontel Plus for Dogs on Chewy.com .

SAFE-GUARD DOSAGE FREQUENCY:

Fenbendazole must be given for at least 3 consecutive daysin order to effectively treat worms, and 5-10 days for Giardia (Giardiasis) depending on severity.

Safe-Guard (Fenbendazole) is said to be 96% effective in treating Giardia in dogs. The 2 most common drugs used to treat Giardiaare fenbendazole and metronidazole . Both drugs may be given in combination depending on the severity of the infection.

INTERESTING SAFEGUARD FACT: Cows need a lower dose of Safeguard (fenbendazole) than dogs do! For example you’d give a 100 pound Cow only 2.3 ml’s and a 100 pound dog needs 22 ml’s.😳 That really surprised me!

ABOUT PANACUR C DEWORMER

Both Panacur C and Safe-guard 4 contain exactly the same deworming medication, fenbendazole, just different brand names. *Both by Merck Animal Health.
Fenbendazole treats hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipwormsin puppies 6+ wks old and adult dogs.
Each box contains a three day treatment with 3 packets of powder per box, either: 1Gm, 2Gm or 4Gm powder packets.
B oxes are based on your dogs weight – 10lb, 20lb and 40lb dogs
The usual dose for dogs is one packet, once a day for 3 consecutive days.

Symptoms of Worms in Dogs and Puppies

You can have a fecal test done by your vet and also watch out for the following signs and symptoms.

Symptoms of Worms Include:

Swollen belly or “Pot Belly” (with or without pain)
Lethargy or weakness
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Weight loss, low appetite or failure to gain weight in young puppies
Dull coat (worms are taking the nutrients)
Worms in stool or vomit
Coughing
Itchy bottoms, scooting their bottom on the floor (does not always mean worms )

Puppies and adult dogs don’t always display obvious signs of a wormat first. So, it’s best to keep them on a regular deworming schedule.

The goal should always be to treat for worms before the symptoms have a chance to become obvious, especially with young puppies . It’s better to assume all puppies have worms and start treating them at 2 weeks old and then every 2 wks until they’re 12 weeks old. Then every 6 months for the lifetime of your adult dogs.

IMPORTANT: Symptoms of worms (listed above) may also be signs of a more serious health issue. If your puppy/dog continues to display symptoms aftera deworming treatment, make sure to contact your veterinarian right away.

We start deworming our puppies and their Mom, regardless of symptoms at 2 wks old with Pyrantel Pamoate, we dose them again at 4 wks old with Pyrantel Pamoate.

We treat our puppies with Safe-guard every 2 weeks, at 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks old, or until they go home which is usually around 8-10 wks old.

We also make sure to let our families know, they need to continue deworming their new puppies every 2 wks until they’re 12 wks old and then twice a year for the life of their dog.

We highly recommend our puppy customers continue to use Safe-guard granuels which are found over the counter at Walmart, Pet Smart, Petco and online at Amazon.com and Chewy.com .

Safe-guard dewormer is not recommended for puppies under 6 weeks oldBUT Pyrantel Pamoate is safe for 2+ wk old puppies.

Both Safeguard and Pyrantel Pamoate claim to be safe for pregnant and lactating female dogs.

My vet recommends we deworm our pregnant dogs 10 days prior to her due dateand then again every three weeks while she’s nursing her puppiesin order to prevent her from transmitting parasites and/or Giardia.

Adult dogs infected with Giardiamay show no symptoms of the disease but can still pass it onto their puppies, which can cause them to have moderate to severe* diarrhea. That’s why it is important to use Safe-guard prior to delivery. Both Mom and any other dogs in your pack that will be kept in the same environment as your Mom and her puppies. Your dogs can be infected with Giardia without you even knowing it…and before it’s too late for your puppies.
