Community Jam

A B O U T
What does it mean to be a smart and caring community?
How can collaborations among community foundations, academic institutions, community agencies, government, business and philanthropic organizations make a positive contribution to the well-being of our communities now and into the future?

In May 2017, delegates from across Canada and around the world will gather in Surrey, British Columbia to explore the issues, ask the difficult questions, share experiences and practices, and chart the way forward.

On May 1st and 2nd, Simon Fraser University, in partnership with Community Foundations of Canada, the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation RECODE program, the City of Surrey and Vancity will welcome delegates to Surrey for two days of interactive programming drawing on 10,000 years of Aboriginal Peoples’ traditions in Canada. This two-day learning exchange is focused on creating a lasting legacy among communities and campuses building smart and caring communities, and includes a community site tour, the Community Journey, an opportunity for groups to share ideas or pose challenges during Open Space, and many other interactive activities.

Unlike traditional conferences, the C2UExpo Community Jam was co-created by over 20 design thinkers, higher education leaders, and community organizations who set the table for a transformative experience that bridges learning, doing, and socializing with the aim of building capacity, impact, and long-term positive change. For the full schedule, visit here.

The C2UExpo conference is hosted every two years and is designed to showcase and celebrate the growth and range of community-campus partnerships in addressing social, health, environmental and community issues. In 2017, the 150th anniversary of Confederation, C2UExpo will be hosted by Simon Fraser University (SFU), which has campuses in Burnaby,
Surrey, and Vancouver.

Smart and Caring Communities
Smart & caring communities is the underlying goal for community-campus partnerships. Delegations will be asked to explore what smart and caring communities mean to them and how they can work together to build them.

10,000 Years of Tradition
In order to build smart and caring communities, it is important to recognize Canada’s past and present relationship with Indigenous communities. The Community Jam will explore what it means to work from 10,000 years of traditions and will engage Aboriginal Peoples in the program design and delivery, the delegations, and the Community Journey (site visits in Surrey).
