History and Info
Fetzima (Levomilnacipran) is an antidepressant approved in the United States for the treatment of major depressive disorder.  It was developed by Forest Labs and approved by the FDA in July 2013.

Fetzima is a Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI) and was approved based on the results of one 10-week phase II and four 8-week phase III clinical trials. No long-term studies were performed.

While most SNRIs affect Serotonin to a much greater extent than Norepinephrine, Fetzima has equal potency for Serotonin and Norepinephrine, causing increased side effects in comparison to other SNRIs.

Norepinephrine is a chemical that plays a significant role in how the body responds to stress. The body’s fight-or-flight response is coordinated by norenephrine and adrenalin, but norepinephrine is more involved with maintaining normal body functions like heart rate, blood pressure and sugar levels as well as responding to perceived threats. Norepinephrine is secreted by the adrenal gland and is produced by the nerve endings in the sympathetic nervous system.

Serotonin affects numerous bodily systems with the largest quantity of Serotonin being produced in the intestines. Serotonin is involved in ¼ of the body’s biological processes including stimulating the release of melatonin from the pineal gland, in turn regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Alterations of serotonin activity are a common affect of psychedelic drugs, as LSD is structurally similar to Serotonin.

The prevalent role of Norepinephrine and Serotonin help to explain the widespread side effects of Fetzima.

Like all SNRIs, a gradual dose reduction versus a rapid withdrawal is recommended. Yet even a slow and measured reduction can cause symptoms that interfere with all aspects of life. Many find they need relief from the symptoms.
