When shopping for Omega-3 fatty acids, it’s easy to be misled. Fish oils are sold everywhere and most do not know how to identify a the differences in blends. Learning how to differentiate these critical areas is essential to your health.

Triglyceride (TG) versus Ethyl Esters (EE)

Omega-3s (EPA and DHA) are available to consumers in one of two forms: Trigylcerides or Ethyl Esters.

Trigylcerides (TG) is what is found naturally in fish. It’s the most natural version of fish oil but expensive to extract and process as they are more delicate.

Many Ethyl Esters are produced through a process that combines crude fish oil in a free fatty acid form with ethanol (an industrial alcohol) to form a synthetic substrate. Under a vacuum, the mix is then heat distilled to create a concentrated ethyl ester solution.

Ethyl Esters are cheaper to produce than Trigylcerides. Many Ethyl Esters are brought to high temperatures making them more malleable for easy production. However, when Ethyl Esters are consumed, they must be processed in the liver where the ethanol is removed, than the body must rebuild the free fatty acids back into a Trigylceride. This inefficiency not only delays the Omega 3s to the bloodstream, but the release of ethyl alcohol may subsequently produce oxidative stress by releasing free radicals.

A new study in Germany found that Omega 3s in the Triglyceride form boost the Omega 3 index in the body substantially higher compared to Ethyl Esters. This study echoes recent Danish findings. The scientists documented their findings in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reporting that supplementation with EPA and DHA in the triglyceride form was significantly higher than ethyl ester.

Evidence suggests that TG fish oils are more readily absorbed than EEs, and clinical evidence indicates that Omega 3 benefits are directly related to fish consumption. Fish are naturally in the TG form, while there are no EEs in nature.  Ethyl Esters have been in the food chain for about 20 years whereas Trigylceride Fatty Acids have been providing benefit for over 600 million years.

At Point of Return we are committed to getting as close to nature as possible and only provide Trigylcerides.

Importance of Omega-3

Research has confirmed that the health benefits of Omega 3 include:
omega-3 benefits
brain health
mood
eye health
heart health
skin health
lung health
joint health
organ and bone support
hormone support
inflammation
blood sugar support

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids are termed “essential” to human health but the body cannot synthesize them and therefore must be obtained from dietary sources. Omega-3 can be found in fish such as anchovy, salmon and tuna; other marine life including algae and krill; some plants and in small amounts in nut oils. Omega-3 fatty acids play a critical role in optimum brain and heart health.

The two Omega-3 acids that have the greatest importance to health are:
Docosahenaenoic Acid (DHA)
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)

DHA and a Healthy Brain

Fish is Brain Food. This cannot be overstated. DHA is a large contributor to brain growth and is crucial to optimal development of the brain and eyes. A large portion of the brain’s grey matter is DHA and DHA is also found in high concentrations in human nerve tissue and in the retina of the eye.

A deficiency of DHA has been linked to cognitive and visual deficits.
Omega-3 and Depression
The brain is composed of 60% fat and needs adequate levels of healthy fatty acids for good mental health. A growing number of studies address the link between low levels of DHA and depression. Research suggests a link between postpartum depression and DHA/EPA deficiencies that may develop during pregnancy. Additional studies support a link between low Omega 3s and depression. While EPA is found only in trace amounts in brain tissue, it contributes to brain functioning by increasing blood flow, influencing hormones and the immune system. But it is DHA that comprises the majority of fat in the brain.
Why does MOOD contain higher levels of DHA than EPA?

Both EPA and DHA support heart health, but DHA is the primary structural component of brain tissue. DHA fat enhances the synaptic plasticity (ability between neurons to change in strength) of membranes. A deficiency of DHA adversely affects brain function. Research is recognizing that DHA has a crucial influence on the neurotransmitters in the brain, assisting brain cells to communicate more effectively.

Asian cultures have long appreciated the brain-building effects of DHA, and in Japan, DHA is considered such an important "health food" that students frequently take DHA pills before examinations.

The Balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 in our diet

While Omega-3 was abundant in our diet before the 20th century, today they are seriously lacking. The typical modern diet includes excessive amounts of corn, soybean and other oils, which are all high in Omega-6. But the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 must be balanced to maintain good health and regulate a healthy inflammation response. It is estimated that the American diet contains 11-30 times more Omega-6 than Omega-3 fats and many experts state a 1:1 ratio is optimal. Heavily processed foods are pro-inflammatory. This extreme imbalance poses numerous health risks, including a decline in brain function and poor cardiovascular health.

When the cells of the human body are deprived of the essential fatty acids needed to function properly they will attempt to build ‘replacement’ fatty acids from inferior fats, but these are actually harmful. Studies have shown high levels of these replacement fatty acids may be linked with ADHD, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Obesity, Heart Disease, Cancer and many others.

Stages of life and Omega-3

DHA is essential for communication between neurons and plays a pivotal role in the brain development of infants and children. Omega-3 is critical for pregnancy since the woman’s body is robbed via the placenta to help form the baby’s brain, eyes, nerves and cellular membranes. Breast-feeding steals even more Omega-3 oils because it is used to form milk.  Omega-3 oils are an essential component to postnatal nutrient replenishment, and DHA is also a fundamental requirement to support the brain later in life.

The brain is constantly restructured throughout the aging process, even into the extremes of old age. Unfortunately, because of food-processing methods and the industrial harvesting of animals as meat sources, most omega-3 fatty acids have been removed from our foods, and although the body naturally produces tiny amounts of DHA, the majority must come from Omega-3 supplements or diet.
EPA for Heart, Joint and Immune Health

Omega-3s are one of the most critical compounds to support a healthy heart.

Both EPA and DHA have shown to reduce resting heart rate while increasing left ventricular filling capacity, while promoting blood vessel relaxation. Omega-3s block the production of enzymes that destroy the joint cartilage, which is importnat in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Both DHA and EPA lower bad cholesterol; increase arterial elasticity and stimulate oxidation in the liver by increasing enzymes.

DHA and EPA can be formed from plants, but the conversion in the human body is slow with only a low amount metabolized. Fish have already completed the conversion of DHA and EPA and are therefore used immediately by the body.

Total Value of Fish Oil is Misleading

When shopping for Omega-3 fatty acids it is easy to be fooled by brands that indicate softgels contain "1000 mg fish oil." This does not mean you are getting 1000 mg. of Omega-3 fatty acids. The total amount of fish oil is misleading. It is the amount of DHA (docosahesaenic acid) and EPA (elcosapentaenoic acid) that determine the potency of an Omega 3.

Most fish oils contain approximately 30% Omega-3 fatty acids, with the remaining 70% being a mixture of components that can include saturated fats, cholesterol, omega-6 fatty acids, and contaminants.  MOOD is a highly concentrated Omega-3 that provides at 70% active DHA and EPA, with few nonessential compounds.

While low concentrations cost less than MOOD, many are providing less benefit.
PURITY: Supercritical Technology

Supercritical Technology uses a low-heat CO2 process to gently extract, purify and concentrate the Omega 3 fatty acids. This prevents oxygen from being exposed to the oil, which in turn protects against degradation.
MOOD fish oils have been purified multiple times through the Supercritical process. We use only small fish caught off the cost of South America.
A third-part laboratory ensures MOOD contains levels of DHA and EPA, while verifying low levels of oxidation, heavy metals, pesticides and other potential contaminants.

The Supercritical Difference:
1. Pure – no other technology can ensure accuracy in removing PCBs, Dioxins and other toxins common in standard fish oils.

2. Potent - Studies show that the higher the concentration of Omega 3s within a gelcap, the more effective it is at lowering triglycerides (bad cholesterol). Many typical fish oils have 1000mg yet contain only 300mg of combined Omega-3s. The remaining 700mg is other saturated and unsaturated fats. These fats prevent the healthy Omega 3s from doing an optimal job.

MOOD is 70% Omega-3s (DHA and EPA) and this potency is achievable through Supercritical Technology.

3. MOOD fish oil originates from anchovy fish harvested off the cost of pristine waters in Peru. These anchovy fish are deemed “non-accumulating” as they are small and don’t live long enough to accumulate the high toxins from the sea.

4. The crude fish oil comes from a sustainable source that focuses on maintaining the balance of nature by closely monitoring the reproductive capacity of the fishery. Fishing is not open at many times of the year to protect the population. We pride ourselves on offering the most sustainable source of wild fish oil in the marketplace.
5. No oil is as environmentally friendly as Supercritical Technology. It has almost no ecological impact unlike other processes such as molecular distillation. In addition, much of the power to the plant is provided through wind technology.

DISTILLATION:

Most fish oils on the market use a distillation process such as steam or molecular to remove impurities while concentrating the Omega-3s. However, molecular distillation involves high temperatures (200-500oF) that are performed multiple times to separate the oil from the fish and again to remove heavy metals and PCBs. Many fish oil blends forego the second step and leave the oil contaminated.

While Americans are eating more seafood, studies have shown that many fish are not safe due to the high amounts of heavy metals and poisonous compounds (PCBs) from industrial waste.  A pure and potent Omega-3 provides the benefits of DHA and EPA without the concern of contamination. Molecular distillation also heat damages the fish oil and can potentially cause toxic byproducts – in a similar way that high temperatures damage plant oils.
